Where to Go for the Best Egg Coffee in Hanoi

Whipped egg yolk, sugar and strong Vietnamese coffee — a Hanoi invention that tastes better than it sounds.

Sample article — to be replaced by The Good Vibes.

Egg coffee (cà phê trứng) was born in Hanoi in the 1940s, when fresh milk was hard to find and a bartender whipped egg yolk with sugar instead. The result is a warm, custard-like cream sitting on top of a small, strong coffee.

How to order it

Ask for it hot (nóng) — it usually comes in a cup standing in a bowl of warm water to keep the cream soft. Stir a little, or eat the foam with the spoon first. There is an iced version too.

Where we take our guests

  • Café Giảng, on Nguyen Huu Huan Street — the family that created the drink still runs it.
  • Café Đinh, upstairs from a small shop on Dinh Tien Hoang Street, with a view over Hoan Kiem Lake.
  • Any small café on the lake side of Hang Bac Street, early in the morning before the crowds.

Staying with us on Ba Trieu Street? The lake and both cafés are a short walk away — ask us for the way when you check in.
